Editorial Reviews

The Renaissance was a time of international exchange among musicians. The composers of the dominant Franco-Flemish school traveled widely, working at the courts of Germany, Spain, and the sacred center of Rome. Renaissance of the Spirit spans the continent and encompasses two centuries of music -- vocal and instrumental, sacred and secular -- from Johannes Ciconia's late medieval complexities to Orlando di Lasso's more lyrical inclinations. But despite the program's incredible variety, all the pieces come from a shared world of sound. The versatile Lasso is at the center here, with an array of madrigals, motets, and pieces for recorder consort, interspersed with magnificent music by his precursors and contemporaries, giving an ample suggestion of the musical culture that produced him. Rapturous settings of the "Ave Maria" by Clemens non Papa, Adrian Willaert, and Nicolas Gombert provide one thread through the program, and instrumental dance interludes make for another. The performances by the Belgian instrumental ensemble I Fiamminghi and the vocal group Currende are all top-notch. Although texts and translations would have been welcome, this album is nevertheless an appealing introduction to the rich and diverse musical treasures of the Renaissance.
