About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Before k. d. lang discovered her gift for ballad singing, she was a Canadian cowgirl with a penchant for comic hoedowns, jokey polkas, and "Cowgirl Pride." She called her 1989 album Absolute Torch and Twang -- even though it was much twangier than its torchy predecessor, Shadowland -- and won a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocalist. Reintarnation is a generous collection of lang's early work, focusing on her three albums with her band the Reclines: 1984's A Truly Western Experience, 1987's Angel with a Lariat, and Torch and Twang. Reintarnation is an hour of shot-and-a-beer fun, going back to an obscure 1983 single, the pedal steel- and fiddle-fueled "Friday Night Promenade," and corralling several tracks from the soundtrack to Gus Van Sant's Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, plus a token tune from Shadowland and the previously unreleased "Changed My Mind" (a song from that era that lang and her longtime collaborator Ben Mink went back to finish). There's a Cajun fiddle dance tune, "Got the Bull by the Horns"; plenty of stompin' country & western such as "Pay Dirt" and "Big Big Love"; and, yes, some torchy ballads like "Curious Soul Astray" and "Trail of Broken Hearts." And, of course, pervading Reintarnation -- which has great Elvis Presley-styled cover art, by the way -- is lang's absolutely peerless, torchy and twangy voice. Steve Klinge, Barnes & Noble

May 08, 2006: It appears that the amazing Miss Lang, is taking a break from being just that. This is nothing more then a re-hash of old material which no longer represents the best of Miss Lang. One would have hoped that after that last dissapointment of an album Miss Lang would bounce back with some great origanal material. The best way for me sum up this body of moldy re-heated left offers is, "Yawn.....Snore". Since there is very little between this and rock bottom, hopefully the next KD Lang Album will be better. Couldn't get much worse.

April 25, 2006: This album is a wonderful introduction to k.d. lang's Country period. Those who think of her as a crooner and torch singer may be surprised by some of these very energetic performances but you will not hear a better voice anywhere. The songs are varied and the album is a delight.
