Hector Martignon's third recording features an array of stellar jazz and world music instrumentalists who interpret six of his songs as if they were rarely seen pictures at an exhibition. With Martignon playing the piano on all of the tracks and adding his vocals to "Observatorio," the ensemble explores the colors, textures and dimensions of each song with perceptive improvisations and unique skill. As the music is unveiled, you, dear listener, will find yourself enveloped in the unmistakable sound Martignon has developed as a result of hearing such pianists and musical influences as Bill Evans, James P. Johnson, and his idol Kenny Barron. The polyrhythmic "Refugee" is Martignon's great tribute to the millions of people forgotten by the world. With the addition of bassist Richard Bona and percussionist Samuel Torres, the spirit of the song takes on another dimension of sensitivity. Torres' interpretation involves adding several takes of African Djembe as well as multiple Afro-Cuban conga rhythms, including an incredible 3/2 cumbia. Inspired during a visit to the tropical island of Tahiti, "Observatorio," beautifully showcases Martignon's debut as a vocalist. The guitar playing of Mark Whitfield also adds incredible sweetness and a solid rhythmic foundation for other bandmembers from which to expand their improvisations. On "Beauty Sleep," you can hear the direct influences of James P. Johnson and Fats Waller's slide and ragtime piano techniques combined with Martignon's rich Latin groove. Give a listen to "Eddie's Ready," which features bassist Eddie Gómez. His sterling solo features the art of pizzicato as it relates to a bass player's integral necessity as the groove master behind this happening song. Overall, this recording places Martignon on an exciting new level than heard on his previous releases, and augments his standing as a shining Latin jazz star. The addition of rhythms from around the world and the incredible musicality by each power player makes this recording one that should be in your Latin jazz collection.
