Red White and Bluegrass is a compilation from CMH Records featuring a handful of bluegrass and country artists performing songs about America. While there are some instrumental versions of "The Star Spangled Banner" and "America the Beautiful," the real fun songs are the ones about places in America. Merle Travis' almost forgotten "There Ain't a Cow in Texas" and the Osborne Brothers' reworking of "Rocky Top" (here called "Georgia Piney Woods") stand out as highlights. The inclusion of the merely average "Pennsylvania Polka" and "Dixie in My Eye" makes it seem like the compilers may have been reaching a little bit to fill in the corners with anything remotely American, but on the whole it is a fun collection.
