Editorial Reviews

"Rapture: Opera's Most Heavenly Moments" is a generous 35-track opera collection that is an interesting departure from the average "opera hits" compilation in that it is sequenced for relaxation listening. Featured here are the expected opera tunes familiar from movie soundtracks and TV commercials, such as Puccini's "Un bel di" (from "Madame Butterfly"/Fatal Attraction), Delibes' "Lakmé Flower Duet," and others. But also included is less familiar, and no less attractive, fare such as the Intermezzo from Franz Schmidt's "Notre Dame" and a number from Mozart's unfinished opera "Zaide." All of these tracks are drawn from Deutsche Grammophon's standing catalog and feature top-rank performers, such as singers Bryn Terfel, Kiri te Kanawa, and Gundula Janowitz, and conductors Leonard Bernstein and Herbert von Karajan. Deep opera collectors will find little on "Rapture: Opera's Most Heavenly Moments" that they don't already know, but for the general interest listener, this is close to an ideal package. "Rapture: Opera's Most Heavenly Moments" is easily recommendable on the basis of its abundant content, thoughtful programming, and in the quality of the individual performances.
