About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

The notes for this CD ask, "What issue is more topical than the Brazilian rain forest? So what reissue would be more topical than Walter Wanderley's Rain Forest?" Politically, this may be true, but musically, this collection is anything but topical. From the first tune -- the monster hit "Summer Samba," the listener is catapulted straight back to the '60s when bossa nova was new in the U.S. and everyone wanted a piece of it. Organist Wanderley made a big splash with this CD, which went platinum in two years -- and it does evoke strong water images, like "poolside" and "ice skating rink." The jazzmen are underutilized, since most of the tracks are less than three minutes long and leave little room to stretch out. One exception is the pretty Ferreira/Marconi ballad "Rain," the only track where Wanderley plays piano rather than organ and which features a fine solo by Urbie Green on trombone. On "Beach Samba," Green gets to noodle a bit, but Bucky Pizarelli is heard stating the melody and nothing else. Despite all the sadness implied in the song titles, this CD has a jaunty feel to it and will be best enjoyed by nostalgic fans of that bygone era. ~ Judith Schlesinger, All Music Guide All Music Guide

December 28, 2008: Trombonist Urbie Green played one of his most beautiful solos ever on Beach even though ANY and ALL things he played were superb. Just for that track alone, this CD is on my next purchase list. I have the 12" 'vinyl pizza' and wore it out to a frazzle.

September 15, 2003: I'm very happy that the Verve folks saw fit to re-release this gem. Ahhhh, that infectious exciting Bossa Nova music, aired for yet another new generation to discover. You can really dance to ths stuff too! Much better than some of that drivel they pass off on the kids as "music" these days. And the major CD companies can't understand why their sales are falling by the wayside! Perhaps if some modern day musicians would revive some of this so called "oldies" stuff with a fresh modern twist, they might just be surprised at it's popularity. Hey, it worked for Swing and Big Band music. Viva Bossa Nova! Well, thanks for sharing my dream. But seriously, this is an excellent CD, very enjoyable, and the cover photography and notes are spectacular. Even if I am about thirty seven years out of date (June 66'), this CD definitely is not!
