About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Bluegrass firecracker Rhonda Vincent ups the ante on this live set, which includes 8 new songs among the 21 exemplary cuts. Back home in Missouri, at St. Louis's Sheldon Concert Hall, Vincent ranges across her catalogue, coming out hard and fast with "Kentucky Borderline" and offering up a searing take on Dolly Parton's "Jolene," a spirited reading of "Driving Nails in My Coffin," and a touching rendition of an Alison Krauss–style bluegrass tear-jerker, "You Can't Take It with You when You Go," all of which showcase the artist's acumen at spicing up tradition with a contemporary rhythmic thrust and pop-inflected vocals that never lose their backcountry flavor. The newly recorded songs, penned by various members of the Rage, include "Me Too," a brisk instrumental set-to by fiddler Hunter Berry, which features a series of jaw-dropping, fleet-fingered banjo and guitar solos challenging Berry's barn-burning bowing. Another, "I've Forgotten You," a harmony-rich, heart-tugging reminiscence of lost love, spotlights one of Vincent's richest, most moving vocals on record. Buttress all this with some southern gospel quartet sounds (on the new "Son Drop In"), a full-throttle vocal and instrumental workout on Jimmie Rodgers's "Muleskinner Blues," some fanciful country blues ("Heartbreakin' Old Achin' Blues") -- not to mention Vincent's engaging presence as hostess -- and the result is one of the most memorable live albums in recent years. An Unforgettable Performanceby Anonymous

June 14, 2009: Rhonda Vincent does everything right here. It's a flawless performance delivered to a rapturous audience by one of the great contemporary figures in Bluegrass or Country music; it is in fact one of the half dozen or so best live performances I've heard in any genre. She brings a voice to the proceedings that some other singers may wish they had, big and powerful when she needs it as when she and her band pound out the rhythms in songs like "Drivin' Nails in My Coffin" or ""One Step Ahead of the Blues" (the latter with her daughter singing harmony), along with the ability and discipline to place some of that power in reserve in quieter numbers where some of the emotion comes from the strength of understatement. She nails the signature Bluegrass harmonies of "Kentucky Borderline" and "Bluegrass Express" with a voice that adds a little cutting edge to a traditional sound we listen for. She can also modulate down for a wistful reading of "Ghost of a Chance" and move on to a delicate and joyful "So Happy I'll Be" and a witty engaging throwaway of "The Martha White Theme" that Garrison Keillor might appreciate. She is generous and supportive to her band and her guests---a quality that is both endearing and classy. When she sings backup for the band members she sings her heart out for them. And the band is excellent. They lay down a heavy bass line on a lot of the numbers which is one of the signatures of her music. This is a still young woman---perfecting her artistry as we listen to each new performance, although even today I think she already stands with the great ones. We are fortunate that there is more to come. I am looking forward to seeing a concert performance.
