The troubadour of Toddlerville celebrates the Christmas season with this newly remastered classic. Raffi, a three-time Grammy Award nominee, revolutionized children's music in the '70s and '80s with kid-friendly songs drawing on reggae, ragtime, gospel, jazz, country, and calypso. With his blend of creativity and whimsy, Raffi ups the ante with some holiday spirit on Raffi's Christmas Album. Here, he brings together interpretations of seasonal holiday classics ("Jingle Bells," "Frosty the Snowman," "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer") and lesser-known gems (Roger Miller's "Old Toy Trains" and Tex Logan's "Christmas Time's A-Coming"), as well as several Raffi originals ("Every Little Wish," "A Child's Gift of Love," "On Christmas Morning"). The music is simple but the rhythms are contagious, and Raffi's eclectic arrangements -- culling accordion, harmonica, orchestra bells, flugelhorn, and seasonal bells and whistles -- are simply irresistible. A children's chorus harmonizes with Raffi's up-front lead vocals on several songs, making sing-alongs from youthful listeners inevitable. In his song "On Christmas Morning," Raffi sums it up nicely: "On Christmas morning/We can sing and celebrate/And make the feeling stay/All through the day." Beth Amos, Barnes & Noble
