December 29, 2005: Rachmaninoff's Isle of the Dead is a tribute to how the romantic and modern idioms can be blended into a single sensational piece. Incorporating a rather somber mood, Rachmaninoff continually develops a very smooth, gliding melody throughout the piece, alluding to the opening melody frequently in varying forms. It is also a great joy to see a highly chromatic piece like this still have such a mellifluous melody. The symphonic dances that follow are also a great joy to listen to due to their steady pulse and bombastic melodies.
