One of the most familiar voices in children's music returns with a soothing set of sleepytime tunes, aptly subtitled "Songs for a pause, a cuddle, or a nap." On this downtime-themed disc, Raffi blends familiar tunes with a handful of original compositions, making for a comfortable, cozy listen. The affable singer keeps the arrangements simple, with only strummed guitars and plinking organ behind his voice on "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star." The instrumental "Nursery Time Medley" is a winsome duet between harp and flute, and on "Rock-a-Bye Baby," Raffi's wordless "ahhhs" are comfortably blanketed between swooning strings and acoustic guitar. His own songs carry sweetly positive messages, so that "Like Me and You" finds the connection between children all over the world. He branches out stylistically as well, as on the bluesy shuffle "Slow Day," a playful homage to unscheduled time off that Louis Armstrong would surely have approved of, and the jazz-leaning "Sunflower," which features a more complex piano lead. Raffi's finale, "Blessed Be," plays like a hymn to all small children, a warmly felt and rendered love song to your little one, just before he or she drifts off to sleep. June 02, 2006: I have this album and I use it when I am babysitting. The child I babysit is a one year old girl who absolutely refuses to take her naps. Raffi knows how to handle difficult parenting situations like this and knows exactly what to do. The only exception to this album is Raffi's rendition of "Rock a bye Baby" His wordless ahhs will make you dizzy and a little nauseous if you listen to them and then stand up too quickly. So watch out for that!
