Editorial Reviews

Welcome back, my friends, to the show that never ends -- although it may get sidetracked into a tractor pull or prog-styled laser show now and again. Breaking a three-year recording hiatus, Ween prove they haven't lost their ability to wind up in dozens of musical places at once without losing the listener once along the way. The Popes of New Hope kick it old-school by including one of their traditional pharmaceutical tributes -- this time to the much-revered "Zoloft" -- and reaffirm their down-the-rabbit hole instrumental interplay on the self-explanatory "The F**ked Jam." Much like its namesake province, Quebec is rife with split-personality juxtapositions: The disc kicks off in overdrive with the bulldozing "It's Gonna Be a Long Night," a tune cut from the same patch of gnarly denim as Motorhead's "Ace of Spades." But before the headbanging gets totally out of hand, Dean and Gene shift into cosmic mode for "Transdermal Celebration." There are bits and pieces of the stoner surrealism that marked their earliest releases -- notably the Residents-styled "Hey There, Fancy Pants" -- but far more numerous (and interesting) are without-a-net space excursions like "The Argus," which propel Ween into the forefront of modern-day astral projecting. August 22, 2003: I really do think "quebec" is their best work since "The Mollusk," and i'm rating it right alongside "Chocolate and Cheese." While "The Mollusk" could be considered mock-concept, I guess this one follows C&C a little more, in that it's unified by its darkness, and once again, band imitations (pink floyd, motorhead, residents, etc). There are a few lighter moments, and some downright stupid ones (The F**ked Jam), but overall, it's ween's most dareisay serious(?) work, and beneath the brownness, there really is some heart...or something.
