Adding to Putumayo's rich selection of children's music CDs culled from around the world is Animal Playground, a rootsy, fun-loving disc. Kids and parents alike will delight in an island-splashed version of "No More Monkey" by Trinidad's Asheba -- also available as a video on the disc's enhanced portion -- "Mbube" (a.k.a. "Wimoweh [The Lion Sleeps Tonight]") from South Africa's Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and the Be Good Tanyas' "The Littlest Birds."
All Music Guide
A collection of playful, kid-friendly songs from around the world, Putumayo Kids Presents: Animal Playground is a nice way to give kids age-appropriate music that's not dumbed down and also exposes them to different cultures and languages. The U.S. is the most heavily represented country here, with four different contributions (Canada and Australia each have one), but also present are the delightful "L'Otorhinocéros" from the French group Les P'tits Loups de Jazz and the Italian version of "Old McDonald," "Nella Vecchia Trattoria," by the Quartetto Cetra. Animal Playground may not be the album you pull out when your kids are finally in bed, but while they're awake, it's a nice one to have on. Marisa Brown
