About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

True to the name, Land of the Loops (the nom de home studio of Alan Sutherland) traffic in the cut-and-paste assembly of samples, beats, and found sounds along the lines of another honestly named band, Belle & Sebastian spinoff Looper. Sutherland's palette tends toward dreamy mid-tempo pieces that might be termed trip-hop if they weren't more science project than deep groove. Although his kitchen-sink gimmickry is toned down from LOL's debut album, BUNDLE OF JOY, it's still not surprising to learn that Sutherland scores music for the Cartoon Network -- his synth belches have a playful, Devo-esque mischief about them. Each of the dozen tracks on PUTTERING is preceded by a half-minute or so of dialogue seemingly lifted from soft-core porn and "Mystery Science Theater 3000"-ready B-flicks, reinforcing the album's tongue-in-cheek tone. But PUTTERING excels on the summery, '60s pop-style songs that feature the sweet, airy vocals of a handful of female vocalists (Japanese pop maverick Takako Minekawa is the standout among them), recalling the breezy melodocism of Adventures in Stereo or His Name Is Alive. These hookier efforts are judiciously sprinkled throughout the album, making PUTTERING a worthwhile ride. Glen Sarvady, Barnes & Noble
