About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Check out any cut from Purpose by Design and you will realize why the multitalented singer and composer Fred Hammond is one of the most sought-after producers in gospel music. This disc is deep. Over a generous 72 minutes, Hammond testifies on 13 tracks so thick and meaty that they cannot be digested fully in one listen. The arrangements twist and turn. Fresh musical ideas -- a funky tag, killer bass riff, or choral flourish -- lurk around every corner, as Hammond's emotive tenor points you toward the light of God's grace. Like his last effort, the award-winning Pages of Life: Chapters I & 2, Purpose By Design mixes lush and punchy studio tracks with the excitement of concert recordings. A live run through Sam Cooke's "Jesus Be a Fence Around Me" takes it down home, culminating in an infectious call and response between Hammond and his tight choir, Radical For Christ. Like a fine sports car, the 16-voice choir is large enough to pack some power yet small and agile enough to make it through Hammond's demanding arrangements. On cuts such as the irresistible, funky "I Know It Was the Blood," the close-miked voices sing right in your ear and effortlessly shift between ensemble and solo singing. "I Press" kicks through a hip-hop inflected groove before the singer breaks it down for the soul ballad sound of "My Father Was/Is." Hammond, the man who reinvented gospel in the '80s with his group Commissioned, continues to point to the future sound of gospel with Purpose By Design. Karl Hagstrom Miller Barnes & Noble
