About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

From his college days playing linebacker on top-rated Oklahoma University football teams to his professional career hanging out in the topmost reaches of the country charts, Toby Keith has become accustomed to the penthouse life. And while Pull My Chain is full of radio- and listener-friendly songs destined for chart success, with Toby Keith there's always meat on the bone, thoughts and feeling to go along with a solid beat and engaging personality. "I'm Just Talkin' About Tonight," the album opener, is the sort of tuneful, straight-talking country rocker on which Keith puts his genial, open-hearted stamp. Similarly, the soft, evocative ballad "You Leave Me Weak" gives Keith an opportunity to get lowdown and bluesy in opening up to the woman of his dreams before belting out the soaring choruses. The ever-reliable Dave Loggins contributes one of the album's nonstop burners, "Pick 'em Up and Lay 'em Down," which finds Keith delivering a blistering vocal attack over searing guitars and booming drums in a fierce, rocking track that just won't quit. "My List" is Keith's self-affirming resolution to make the most of each day, while the tearjerking "You Didn't Have as Much to Lose" shows off a sensitive side under the macho posturing. A nice blend of fiery, rocking songs and tender, introspective moments, Pull My Chain figures to be to country music what Keith's alma mater was to college football in 2000: Totally dominant.
