Editorial Reviews

This recording of Tosca is the soundtrack to a film version of Puccini's opera by the French director Benoit Jacquot -- which might help to explain the performance's exceptionally vivid dramatic atmosphere. From the brutal, menacing opening chords, the story bursts luridly to life. Angela Gheorghiu is a Tosca in the Callas mold, her voice dark and her passions intense; here is a true diva, a woman less concerned with being endearing than with commanding respect. Roberto Alagna is a rough-hewn Cavaradossi, not as sweet of voice as usual but every inch the ardent revolutionary. Ruggero Raimondi's voice has lost some of its focus, but he is still a chilling Scarpia -- one whose power is enhanced because he can actually turn on the charm. But the real star here is conductor Antonio Pappano; his direction generates powerful blasts of emotional heat. The recorded sound seems larger-than-life, as befits this sordid tale. A knock out!
