About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Comprised entirely of recordings Grace Jones made at Compass Point Studios during the early '80s, the double-disc Private Life: The Compass Point Sessions features 26 tracks, including two unreleased cuts and four previously unreleased mixes of hit songs. These are unquestionably Jones' best material, mainly because she was supported by a top-notch studio band and produced by Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. Several of these cuts work well, and there's no denying that any serious fans of her work will find this necessary. Less-dedicated listeners, however, are advised to stick with Nightclubbing, which is the best album to be culled from these sessions. Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

November 23, 2003: All these years as I go through some of my favorite music that came out from year to year, Grace Jones was one of a kind. She fit right into all the crazy hair and sound of the 80's but her music was ahead of its time, so many moods, danceable for sure, reggee/rock/ funk/pop in a stew that seem to come from another planet. Her attitude carried off these tunes but no one else was like her, she managed like Bowie to reivent herself for the 80's after a romp with the disco lights and the whole studio 54 backlash, (she was one of the better in that disco mode as well) its too bad she couldn't stay with the record companies that broke her out, she went on to do a more commerically challanging work but nothing earth shaking as these tracks. Her work with Niles Rogers and Trevor Horn also were of the highest quality but music was beginning to change and Grace's image was copied a million times over. Great stuff even to this day its sonic candy for the ear. This is full of classic music for years to come and enjoy.
