The unstoppable Ray Price has continually sought out new musical landscapes in which to give his astounding vocal talents free reign. PRISONER OF LOVE finds the Cherokee Cowboy in wonderful form on a collection of honky-tonk and pop standards backed by a swinging orchestra. Not unlike Willie Nelson's breakout STARDUST, this disc finds a veteran interpreter injecting a little country into the pop songbook. "Fly Me to the Moon," "What a Wonderful World," and the title cut show Price to be adept at making standards glow with his own personality and vision. Now in his mid-70's, Price is no longer the possessor of the high tenor that first caught the ears of Hank Williams fans in the early 1950s. His range has dropped several notches, yet his smooth delivery still shines through, and the gravel in his voice belies the years of experience Price brings to these charts. PRISONER OF LOVE is a lush and precious disc. It's a gift from an old friend who survived the country music NIGHT LIFE for more than 50 years. The twinkle in Ray Price's voice leaves no doubt: It's been a beautiful journey so far. Karl Hagstrom Miller Barnes & Noble
