About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Contemporary praise trio Selah put a modern spin on classic inspirational music with their beautifully simple debut, Be Still My Soul -- and brought home a 1999 Dove Award in the process. Press On, the group's sophomore release, takes that basic concept and steps it up a notch. The trio's rich harmonies are embellished with lush production, while the song selections have been broadened with a healthy dose of gospel and blues. Of course, Press On, offers plenty of the harmony-rich traditional hymns that first earned Selah kudos: Nicol Smith, Todd Smith, and Allen Hall have the ability to take a well-worn hymn like "How Great Thou Art" (or, for that matter, pop fare like the Beatles' "In My Life") and breathe such life into it, they can almost reinvent the song. But where Be Still My Soul was a quiet, introspective affair, Press On, is energetic and uplifting. Songs like gospel standard "Hold On" and a bluesy rendition of "Amazing Grace" show off all of Nicol Smith's smoky soulfulness -- surely hers is one of the best voices in the business this side of Ashley Cleveland. Special treats include the Congolese hymn "Yesu Azali Awa," a joyous number performed in tribute to the Smiths' youth in Africa, and "Deep (Way Down)," which is full of rousing, hand-clapping, foot-stomping praise. Legendary singer Russ Taff lends his stellar talents to "Were You There," an extra-nice treat on what is already an excellent collection. Could there be more Doves in Selah's future? It would seem so. Lisa Zhito, Barnes & Noble
