From the opening notes of Joanne Shenandoah's inviting alto on her original song "Peace and Power," it's evident that the music on this compilation is meant not so much to speak of peace, or even to pray for it, but to instill it. The warmth of Shenandoah's song, sung in her native Iroquois, reminds that it is from a place of peace that we make our best decisions. Pianist Peter Kater and flutist R. Carlos Nakai follow up on that theme with the instrumental "Surrender." Robert Mirabal's combination of flute, cello, guitar, percussion, and chanted vocals which make up "Painted Caves" offer a rhythmic door to contemplation, while Alice Gomez' stately "Pyramid Temples" combines percussion and pan pipes in a sound hinting of ancient Andean dances. Michael Cusson, Lawrence Laughing, and Mary Youngblood also contribute their music to the project, which unlike many collections of previously released tracks, works together as an integrated whole.
