One of the greatest saxophone players in the history of rock & roll, King Curtis truly lived up to his name, and this excellent double-disc reissue is more than concrete evidence. With great confidence and ease, he takes on some of the finest moments of the Memphis soul movement and delivers the goods with his signature understated "less is more" approach to improvisation and melody. Some of the playing here is among his best of the '60s. The second half of the reissue isn't as stunning, with Curtis covering many late-'60s chart-toppers -- at some points this works well ("I Was Made to Love Her") and at other times not so much ("To Sir with Love" being one of the more pungent offenses). All in all, it's worth the purchase for the Memphis sessions alone. Rob Theakston, All Music Guide
