This disc, part of Sony's flimsily packaged Playlist series, covers 1972 through 1978, when the O'Jays (and Gamble & Huff) were at the peak of their powers. "Sunshine" excepted, each song here placed somewhere within the Top 20 of the R&B chart, and many of them went to the top. A decent, quick, and relatively cheap way to obtain the big hits -- "Back Stabbers," "Love Train," "For the Love of Money," "Use ta Be My Girl," and so forth -- but definitely more a no-frills piece of product than a proper anthology. Sets like The Essential O'Jays were put together with more thought and care. Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
