On his score for the summer 2001 revisiting of Planet of the Apes, Grammy-winning and Oscar-nominated composer Danny Elfman (Mission Impossible, Batman) once again shows his mastery at blending varied percussion and a full orchestra in exciting and innovative ways. For Apes, he reconnects with director Tim Burton, and the results recall Elfman's beautiful score for Edward Scissorhands. He builds musical thunder on "The Return," which deceptively begins with a lyrical passage before shifting into a rising crescendo and exploding into "Main Title Deconstruction," a percussion-based track drawing on eclectic instrumentation, from large West African xylophones to upside-down beer cans played with tiny mallets. The resulting clamor echoes the menacing plotline by evoking a sense of inescapable danger. Ace club DJ Paul Oakenfold (who recently scored Swordfish) caps the disc off with "Rule the Planet Remix," in which a seductive female voice ominously intones, "Some say it was just a fairy tale...." over a hypnotic mix of percussive thunder and heady electronic beats. With their new take on an American classic, Elfman and Burton once again make it cool to go ape crazy. Andrew Velez, Barnes & Noble
