Editorial Reviews

Varese Sarabande does a great service by being the first label to present Jerry Goldsmith's entire score in all of its percussive glory. The additional 21 minutes, plus resequencing the music the way it originally appeared in the film, creates a fresh listening experience for this historically innovative soundtrack. A more dubious addition is the 16˝-minute suite from Escape From the Planet of the Apes. The music -- mirroring what happens when some ape scientists travel back to 1970s America -- often sounds positively kitschy with its intrusions of electric guitars, sitars, electronic keyboards and rock drumming.
