About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Although the Smashing Pumpkins had only released two studio albums by 1994 (1991's gish and 1993's Siamese Dream), they had an overflow of songs that were either relegated to B-sides on European singles or remained unreleased. Billy Corgan proved to be one of rock's most prolific songwriters of the 1990s alt rock movement -- as the quality of these early leftovers were often just as strong as the songs that were officially released. Since nearly all of these songs were never issued domestically, the B-side/rarity collection Pisces Iscariot was issued alongside their first long-form home video, Vieuphoria. The collection proved to be a feast for fans -- it's inexplicable why such exceptional rockers ("Plume," "Hello Kitty Kat," "Frail and Bedazzled," "Blue") and ballads ("Obscured," "La Dolly Vita") weren't featured on albums. Also included is the long and winding, 11-minute epic jam fest "Starla," which proves that Corgan was one of the finest (and most underrated) rock guitarists of the '90s, as well as a pair of unlikely covers -- Fleetwood Mac's gentle "Landslide" and the Animals' psychedelic "Girl Named Sandoz." Also included are insightful liner notes (strewn with typos) from Corgan. While it's not the definitive B-sides collection of pre-Mellon Collie Pumpkins (such tracks as "Bullet Train to Osaka," "Purr Snickety," "Apathy's Last Kiss," "My Dahlia," "Jackie Blue," "Glynis," and others are nowhere to be found), Pisces Iscariot contains some of Corgan and company's finest moments. January 05, 2006: this collection of b-sides and rarities from Billy Corgan and crew really emphasises Corgan's prolific songwriting and underrated guitarmanship. it serves multiple purposes for fans of The Smashing Pumpkins. for completists (a joke considering the amount of material out there for fans), it collects b-sides that might have cost a pretty penny finding on their own along with some unreleased material you might not find anywhere else. for amateur historians, it provides a unique look at the bridge the Pumpkins crossed to reinvent themselves from the psychadelic 80's garage rock of Gish to the refined boston pop-rock of Siamese Dream. Finally, if you just want some extra early pumpkins style listening, not one track is a throwaway. highlights include "whir", the James Iha penned "blew away", "hello kitty kat", the cover of "landslide" whose beauty far surpasses that of the original, and the epic "starla". if this isn't enough to convince you, the disc also serves more as one of the best rock albums ever recorded than a collection of random songs.

October 15, 2004: Even though it's an album of outtakes and b-sides these songs featured on Pisces Iscariot deserved a spot on Siamese Dream (well seeing that most of them were Siamese outtakes). I got into the band from the song “Today”. But instead of getting Siamese Dream I got this. It was an intentional buy. I was curious; the album cover just said GET ME and not to mention it had a sticker saying not available in stores so I thought it was a limited edition thing (mind you this was in 2000 and it was released in 1994) so I was fooled but I am glad I fell for that. As they say things happen for a reason. At first it was an impressive listen. But as time went on and I started to REALLY pay attention I found these songs were very easy to relate to. Better yet was the liner notes from Mr. Corgan. Those notes just brought about such a new level of intimacy. You felt like you really got to know what he was feeling while writing and recording the songs. You felt like you were with the band during the sessions. It’s a really good collection these songs are deep and it carries you into another world the way music should. Also it features a song sung by the very talented Mr. James Iha. Really wish he had more songs available to the public. This album deserves to be placed on a mantle just as high as their other epics: Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness. Amazing how a collection of b-sides made me a hardcore smashing pumpkins fan, so you could very well imagine my shock when I heard the songs they intended on the albums. This album will not disappoint. A must have and it will open up your eyes to the amount of emotion Billy Corgan and his band mates put into these songs.
