About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Jewel's 1995 debut was the very essence of a sleeper hit. At first, her poetic lyrics, acoustic strums, and folkie cred (raised in Alaska, lived in a van) went unnoticed in a time of gangsta rap and grunge. Once the fluid "Who Will Save Your Soul" crept onto the airwaves, however, Jewel staked her claim, and her first hit budged only for its more subdued successors, "You Were Meant for Me" and "Foolish Games." The remaining tracks play out in the same quiet, spare, and bare format, though the title track and "Daddy" display a rare caustic edge. Like all runaway successes, Jewel has as many critics as fans, and her lovelorn laments have prompted titters as well as tears. Still, there's no denying her engaging way with words. Look beyond the hits to songs like "Don't" for honest, stripped-back emotion, and to "Morning Song" for a sweetness often missing in pop music. Rebecca Wallwork, Barnes & Noble

August 25, 2006: Pieces of You is a perfect album for those days when you feel really frustrated, confused, sad, happy, angry, or just plain emotional. Jewel really touches on some powerful feelings here: the pain of lost love (You Were Meant For Me & Painters), the anger of an abused child (Daddy), and the conflicting ideas of society (Who Will Save Your Soul? & Pieces of You). As for the music, the guitars and soft keyboards on the album could almost be set to lullabies. All in all a very deep, very thought provoking album.

July 11, 2003: Beautiful melodies combine with intelligent lyrics and hauntingly brilliant guitar backing to produce Jewel's signature sound. All these songs are deep and deeply emotional, but not all of them draw the listener fully in; it is sometimes difficult to relate. The best song is undoubtedly 'Foolish Games', and 'Morning Song' is a close second. Brilliantly crafted, this album is a must-listen.
