Jewel's 1995 debut was the very essence of a sleeper hit. At first, her poetic lyrics, acoustic strums, and folkie cred (raised in Alaska, lived in a van) went unnoticed in a time of gangsta rap and grunge. Once the fluid "Who Will Save Your Soul" crept onto the airwaves, however, Jewel staked her claim, and her first hit budged only for its more subdued successors, "You Were Meant for Me" and "Foolish Games." The remaining tracks play out in the same quiet, spare, and bare format, though the title track and "Daddy" display a rare caustic edge. Like all runaway successes, Jewel has as many critics as fans, and her lovelorn laments have prompted titters as well as tears. Still, there's no denying her engaging way with words. Look beyond the hits to songs like "Don't" for honest, stripped-back emotion, and to "Morning Song" for a sweetness often missing in pop music. Rebecca Wallwork
