About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

The Beatles adored it, and the Rolling Stones took out an ad in the British music papers urging everybody to buy it: Pet Sounds is not only the Beach Boys' best album but also one of the undisputed classics of the '60s. Written (save for an adaptation of the old folk song "Sloop John B.") by head Beach Boy Brian Wilson and a young advertising copywriter named Tony Asher, the album is a melancholy meditation on adulthood, desire, and failed romance. Featuring stunning melodies ("God Only Knows"), intricate vocal arrangements ("Wouldn't It Be Nice"), and innovative instrumentals ("Let's Go Away for Awhile"), Pet Sounds was, in 1966, also a staggering technical accomplishment. Working the old-fashioned way -- that is, without the benefit of synthesizers and samplers -- Wilson created a rich, symphonic sound by blending multiple vocal tracks and conventional keyboards and guitars with harpsichords, flutes, and Hawaiian-tinged strings, then added a panoply of sound effects: bicycle bells, Coca-Cola cans, a Theremin, barking dogs. Although only a moderate hit upon its release, Pet Sounds has proved hugely influential over the years. In 1997 it was rereleased as a four-CD box set, including one disc of a never-before-heard stereo mix. The 1999 reissue marks the first release of the stereo version (plus the mono original) on a single CD. Bottom line: A masterpiece. Steve Simels, Barnes & Noble

April 30, 2007: There are great arrangments of these classic songs to make it a great album. The use of sound effects, pre-synthizer days is awsome.

A slice of pop music heavenby Anonymous

February 17, 2005: This is the "Citizen Kane" of popular music. Inspired by what he heared on "Rubber Soul", Brian Wilson set out over the next few months to create what he called the album of all time. To this day, many a serious pop music fan believes that that is exactly what he accomplished. "Pet Sounds" is the only album that ever really made the Beatles shake in their boots, and it's not hard to see why. The melodies, vocal harmonies, and production are all perfect. The album has a "coming of age" theme; ironically this is one of the albums where rock music came of age. It doesn't matter if you're hearing it for the first time or the thousandth time - "Pet Sounds" is stunning in its beauty and perfect execution. To think Brian Wilson once said, "I'm not a genius. I'm just a hard-working guy." Humble and modest are not even the words.
