Editorial Reviews

Credited as the first gospel album to be recorded live, "Peace Be Still" remains a timeless classic, the best work of a man whose passion for church music is inescapable. Cleveland, whose Gospel Music Workshop of America has had a profound impact on the movement, builds his music on common Sunday-morning church service chord structures. Featuring Billy Preston on organ and recorded at celebrated producer Lawrence Roberts's First Baptist Church in Nutley, NJ, PEACE BE STILL was an instant hit and has been a continuous seller since its release in 1963. Produced on a four-track tape recorder, the tonal quality is surprisingly resilient. Also outstanding are Cleveland and the Angelic Choir's embellishment of standard church fare like "Where He Leads Me," "Shine on Me," the foot-stompin', Pentecostal-flavored "I'll Be Caught Up to Meet Him" and "I'll Wear a Crown." Other standout cuts include "Jesus Saves," an old-fashioned call and response hymn and "I Had a Talk with God," a revamped version of the Mitty Collier R&B hit. Lisa Collins, Barnes & Noble
