Editorial Reviews

The musical material for this elegant and serenely beautiful ensemble work, written in 1995-1996 and scored for Eastern and Western instruments in alternative tunings, is based on data derived from two electrodes, attached to various plant leaves, that measure slight changes in the plants' electrical potential. This dynamic data is then translated into lovely melodic patterns (via the computer music software called MAX). Each of the six movements -- consisting of solos, duos, trios, and the last a quartet -- is a "collection" of four "patterns," and a different tuning system is applied to each collection. The ensemble consists of 20-stringed and 17-stringed kotos, hitsu (25-stringed zither), sho (mouth organ), harpsichord, and two violas da gamba. "Blue" Gene Tyranny, All Music Guide
