About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Parallel Dreams, the Canadian harpist/songwriter's quietly moving sophomore release, finds the mystical red-haired siren in true balladeer form. By far McKennitt's most romantic venture -- the liner notes describe the project's central theme as a "yearning toward love, liberty and integration" -- Dreams is more ambitious than her sparse, impeccably recorded debut, Elemental, tripling the amount of players and laying the groundwork for the immense scope she would go on to attain on future recordings. The heartbreaking trio of "Standing Stones," "Annachnie Gordon," and "Dickens' Dublin" -- the latter features an effective radio-show sample of an unnamed Irish school child detailing the birth of Christ -- stand among the artist's finest works, and the range and clarity of her voice is undeniably powerful. Parallel Dreams was an emotional and career-turning point for McKennitt, as her next recording would be the major-label spectacle The Visit. Reverend Lee Power, All Music Guide

December 30, 2002: Parallel Dreams is more exciting than Elemental. If you are thoroughly in love with the sound of the Mask and the Mirror, you have practically ruined your Loreena McKennitt experience. This CD shows a definite shift from her traditional arrangements on her first disc. "Standing Stones" is my all time favorite song...so far. It is a haunting song of love. This song has the most going on. I am thinking this was the last song she wrote for the disc, even though it is track 5. The mournful Uillean pipes add the haunting strains to its even more haunting lyrics. Buy it, but Book of Secrets-lovers beware, Loreena McKennitt's music didn't always sound like the "Mummer's Dance"

December 07, 2001: My college roommate introduced me to this CD, and now I am trying to find more by Loreena McKennitt. She has an amazing voice, and the songs are gorgeous. The style presented in ''Parallel Dreams'' is very relaxing and emotional. I love listening to this music to unwind while watching the stars at night.
