About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

When Mali's legendary Rail Band attempted to recruit traditional singer Salif Keita three decades back, the griot replied, "I don't do modern music." Keita, the reigning prince of African pop, has since eaten his words. SORO, his 1987 debut, is a world-music classic, and Keita has since collaborated with Carlos Santana, Wayne Shorter, and Joe Zawinul, among others. PAPA, his mesmerizing sixth solo album, was recorded in New York and the Malian capital of Bamako. Keita shares production duties with ex-Living Color ax-man Vernon Reid and gets a little help from John Medeski and Grace Jones. A quick look at those names might suggest that PAPA's nine songs rock and thump 'til the break of dawn. But an army of Malian musicians, including Keita's longtime guitarist Ousman Kouyate and kora virtuoso Toumani Diabate, keeps things real; "Tolon Wilile" and "Abede" feature traditional Malian acoustic instrumentation. "Together," with searing guitar work from Reid, unites the entire ensemble in a closer worthy of an African Parliament-Funkadelic. On the whole, PAPA's a deeply contemplative disc, and its atmospheric, trip-hoppy feel is a perfect cosmopolitan balm for a hot summer night. Errol Nazareth, Barnes & Noble
