Long before Yanni played to packed stadiums and Vangelis was a mainstream film composer, a handful of electronic music artists with full names plied the trade with considerable aplomb. Among those early few was a pioneering synthesist named Jean-Michel-Jarre, whose critically acclaimed and commercially successful releases during the late '70s and early '80s irrefutably placed him at the head of his musical class. OXYGENE, released in 1977, is quite arguably one of the most important releases in the realm of electronic new age music. Anyone who has ever heard the pulsing melody of "Oxygene, Part II" has it indelibly etched in their gray matter. Though Jarre released excellent and well-received albums throughout this period -- notably EQUINOXE and MAGNETIC FIELDS -- OXYGENE most typifies his melodic and rhythmic strengths. With his electronically windswept aural canvas, Jarre created the ultimate late-night, musically caressing, sensuous piece for both lovers and the lonely. Ken Masters, Barnes & Noble
