About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Joseph Arthur has established himself as one of the more compelling singer-songwriters of recent years, thanks in part to his willingness to strip down emotionally, in part to his lack of reliance on by-the-book songwriting form. His fourth disc, Our Shadows Will Remain builds on the atmospheric tone of 2002's Redemption's Son, maintaining the generally introspective vibe but branching out considerably in terms of sonics. That's most evident on a passel of tunes that employ string passages recorded by the Prague Philharmonic, an ensemble that adds a suitably drizzly counterpoint to the quietly insistent "Echo Park" and a poignant edge to the cutting "Stumble and Pain." Arthur ventures out of his insular realm now and again as well, proving his mettle as a beat purveyor on the electronically driven "I Am, Wasted" and showing a surprising flair for things Goth on the moody "Puppets." He gets out of his depth now and again -- "Even Tho" is bombastic enough to appear on a Meat Loaf album -- but for the most part, Our Shadows Will Remain possesses a timeless quality that points to that title being prophetic. April 08, 2008: i relisten to joseph arthur again and again. his voice is soothing and interesting on many levels. one thing i always do as a dumb obsession when i listen to music is pick out each underlying layer of sound and defined instrument. joseph arthur's work is amazing and has never ceased to amaze me. i highly recommend this book as both a music lover and a fan.
