About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

As their blue-eyed soul peer Michael McDonald did with his Motown collections, Daryl Hall and John Oates revisit the soul music of their youth on this album of covers. Recorded at Hall's home studio in the Bahamas, Our Kind of Soul, recasts a bushel of classics with organic interpretations. Since Hall & Oates hail from the City of Brotherly Love, it's no surprise that some of the songs come from the Philly International vaults of composers/producers Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff. Among the notable examples of their revamped Philly soul classics is the O'Jays' "Used to Be My Girl," updated with a funky drum-loop, an acoustic reading of the Spinners' "I'll Be Around," and a romantic, more adult contemporary take on Teddy Pendergrass's "Love TKO." Elsewhere, the dynamic duo lend their timeless harmonies to a stripped-down arrangement of Barry White's "Can't Get Enough of Your Love" and a thumping version of Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady." Most impressive are the original compositions sprinkled throughout, including the yearning "Soul Violins," distinguished by Hall's ever-soulful falsetto, and the string-laden, electric guitar-accented "Let Love Take Control." With Our Kind of Soul, Hall & Oates continue to honor the R&B legacy that's become such an inextricable part of their rock-'n'-soul sound. Dave Gil de Rubio, Barnes & Noble

May 31, 2005: I cannot tell you how good it is to hear Hall and Oates singing loudly from my cd player. I am even more happy that they have not tried to "reinvent" themselves, but have stuck to their own harmonieous sound. That is what makes them unique. This is why I love them-they still sound rich in vocals and groove muscially too. I love them, I love them, I love them!!! "TESLA"

May 28, 2005: Hall and Oates have put together a set of great classics with several new songs, and put it together in one CD-Our Kind Of Soul. It’s a wonderful tribute to some of the great classic soul artists. The acoustic arrangements of these hits are fantastic, performed as only H&O could, and with 17 tracks, each as good as the previous, it is one of the best CDs of true soul classics available. As an example, the first single, "I'll Be Around" has been on the A/C charts for nearly 40 weeks. I’m expecting that my favorite track, “Used To Be My Girl” will be close behind. I listen to this CD nightly on my hour drive home from work, and (except for the traffic) it’s like going back in time. Relaxing…Enjoyable…Incredible!!! The number one duo has put together one excellent CD for those of you who are classic soul fans. Pick up this CD today. You will not be disappointed…
