About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

1977's OPPOSITE PEOPLE has Fela and Africa 70 in solid funk-jazz mode, with extended solos by the leader and trumpeter Tunde Williams over meaty mid-tempo funk grooves -- somebody was listening hard to Fred Wesley and the JB's. Fela's lyrics are more lighthearted than usual, particularly on "Equalisation of Trouser and Pant." SORROW TEARS AND BLOOD is far more serious: two long anticolonialist screeds that Fela's label originally refused to release, calling them "seditious." "Colonial Mentality," in particular, is a Fela classic, a slow, merciless bump-and-touch about self-imposed slavery. Mark Schwartz, Barnes & Noble
