About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

In retrospect, Opiate seems a little haphazard, but it's possible to hear the seeds of Tool's oppressively bleak, cerebral metal in such cuts as "Sweat" and "Opiate." The two live tracks, "Cold and Ugly" and "Jerk-Off," don't sound out of place, since they share the same churning riffs, black noise, and doom that characterize Tool's sound. This is not as developed as either Undertow or Ænima</i>, but it's possible to hear the roots of those albums all over this EP. Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

September 30, 2008: How can some of you who say you like Tool, not like this record? Yes, there are no quiet-loud-quiet elements, its all just loud but the riffs, the rage, the irreverence--and yes, the melody--are all in there. Awesome seminal EP from one of the best to make music.

February 26, 2008: This isn't the CD that made Tool famous. "Undertow" is the great CD that made Tool famous. "Opiate" doesn't have any hits or any good songs. This is a CD that will turn you off to Tool. Play the samples. Some fans who know nothing about Tool love "Opiate."
