February 04, 2005: An individual character is evident for all of Ms. Merchant's solo endeavours: Tigerlily, poetic and precious; Motherland, earthy as coffee grounds; THCD, an academic, grave, and celebratory venture. But NONE of these albums- none- has the ethereal beauty and lushness of OPHELIA. From the opening track, in which Merchant follows a woman through history; to the fierce desire to be wanted displayed in "My Skin"; to the poetic and distilled wintry beauty of "Frozen Charlotte"; to the cappers of them all, the emotionally and inetellectually stirring "King of May" and "Life is Sweet". It is this display of Merchant's career where she's at the top of her game: evocative lyrics and a voice with a lovely gravitas and tenderness. As in the many-costumed OPHELIA photographs, Merchant shows that she is a many faceted, talented artist.
