Barnes & Noble

The German soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf is best known for her interpretations of Mozart, Schubert, Wolf, and Richard Strauss -- in other words, serious stuff. On this delicious recital of Viennese operetta arias, she reveals her talent in lighter fare. Of course, her musicianship is always impeccable -- few singers phrase so intelligently -- and she lavishes the same loving attention to detail on a waltz that she would on a heavy operatic role. But it's the smile in her voice that makes this album so delectable. Schwarzkopf obviously loves this repertory, and her winsome enthusiasm is infectious. Very few of these lilting arias are known today, but each has a special charm that will win over all but the most curmudgeonly listener. Andrew Farach-Colton

I for one have certainly never heard more glorious operetta singing -- or indeed choral and orchestral accompaniment -- than there is here. It's music and singing to swoon over, one of the classic recitals of the century. Andrew Lamb
