When Britney Spears perkily popped onto MTV last year with the well-choreographed clip for the infectious "...Baby One More Time," no one guessed (besides Jive Records' savvy marketing team) that the Louisiana teen would start a fashion trend with Catholic school girl pleats and knee-highs, or more important, that Spears would spawn a slew of young, flaxen-haired starlets such as fellow Mouseketeer Christina Aguilera, the giggly Mandy Moore, and the virtuous Jessica Simpson. Now as the challenges to her throne mount, the original queen of teen is back with Oops!...I Did It Again. And as the title predicts, Spears has done it again. Using the same winning combination as ...Baby One More Time -- thin yet pleasing vocals cooing over catchy pop songs heavy on bubbling synth hooks and punctuated bass-lines -- the cutey turned hottie has another bona fide hit album on her hands. Just as the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync re-merged with a more mature sound on their sophomore efforts, so has Spears. Thanks to pop über-producer Max Martin (Celine Dion, Backstreet Boys), Spears shines on the tongue-in-cheek lead single, the triumphant "Stonger," and the rousing, get-lost declaration "Don't Go Knockin' on My Door." Kudos also go to country diva Shania Twain, who cowrote the polished ballad "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know," and to Spears, who co-wrote the confessional "Dear Diary." While die-hard Rolling Stones fans may flinch at her almost guitar-less verison of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," Spears' breathy delivery gives the song a pulse-raising sense of urgency. As a whole, Ooops! tells the story of a young woman coming to terms with the peaks and valleys of being Miss Popular -- from fame to boys to breaking hearts. But from all indications, Spears will continue her ascent. Tracy E. Hopkins, Barnes & Noble
