About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

In 1965, poised on the brink of a musical breakthrough that would find him delving into deep avant-garde waters, John Coltrane was still leading his "classic" quartet. With drummer Elvin Jones, pianist McCoy Tyner, and bassist Jimmy Garrison in tow, the brilliant tenor and soprano saxophonist continued to explore song forms ("Afro Blue," "My Favorite Things") but was also fast dissolving standard musical structures. Individual numbers now regularly stretched out to ten-plus minutes and way beyond, nearly half an hour in some cases, with long and spectacularly intense duets between the leader and his drummer. In fact, each member of the quartet is in peak form here: Coltrane may be the instigator and mastermind behind the group, but his inspired cohorts goad him on to higher ground. These near-legendary performances -- their sound greatly enhanced in contrast to the bootleg versions that have circulated for years -- capture a courageous group of visionaries as they extend the boundaries of jazz. Steve Futterman, Barnes & Noble
