Editorial Reviews

On the Trail Again concentrates on Frankie Laine's Western and faux-folk recordings for Columbia from 1952-62, including several remakes of songs he had recorded for Mercury and a number of Western film themes. The high drama and brash intensity of Laine's Western efforts isn't too far removed from the work of Tex Ritter or Johnny Western, but his powerhouse vocals could blast either of those two out of the studio. A few of the arrangements are a little too over the top for the material, particularly the frenetic xylophone and harpsichord on "El Diablo," but fans of ambitious and unorthodox Dimitri Tiomkin-style Western music will love every minute of this collection.
