Editorial Reviews

This gig in the On the Road series documents the midnight show String Cheese Incident in a festive mode near Halloween -- the stage photos from the show are outrageous, so it's impossible to capture the feel of the gig fully without video. No matter; musically, this show burns form start to finish. For starters, the band ease their way into a smoking version of KC & the Sunshine Band's "Get Down Tonight," aided by two members of Pangea's horn section in Chris Cuzmey and Dan Sears. They stick around for the band's own funk jam, "Black and White." Before departing for a spell while STI wind through "MLT" and "Sirens," and come back for "Lost" and "Search," then allow for a seven-minute drum solo before kicking off disc two with a burning, 18-and-a-half minute version of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" (which makes its debut appearance on CD here). There's also a cool read of the Meters' "Hey Pocky Away," with members of Umphrey's McGee.The second disc ends with a beautiful "Rivertrance" (one has to wonder if this tune is ever played less so; every version in the live series has been inspired). Disc three concludes the second set with cooking versions of "Drifting," "This Must Be the Place," and "Desert Dawn" (the latter with deeply moving solos by Kyle Hollingsworth and Bill Nershi), and "Restless Wind." The encore here, "Miss Brown's Teahouse," calls in the Pangea horns and brings everything to a thunderous close. Getting both of the Vegas shows on November 25, 2005 is a must for any serious STI fan, and the band's website makes it simple to get hold of. Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
