About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

It's taken more than four years for this oft-delayed disc to finally reach stores, but given the glacial moods and timeless feel exuded by Mark Kozelek and company, there's nary a moment on Old Ramon that sounds dated. As ever, the songs are cinematic and full of portent, and it's easy to get caught up in sweeping tracks such as the sinuous "Void" and the rending "Smokey," which dissects the collapse of a relationship in excruciating detail. The oddly aggressive undertone marking songs such as "Between Days" and the misanthropic "Cruiser" may well be a bit harsh for diehard fans: Both songs would have dovetailed with the hard-rock material that dominates Kozelek's solo outings. Elsewhere, though, the band (now fleshed out by guitarist Phil Carney) tries on better-fitting new guises, such as the out-and-out pop of "Byrd Joel" and the folky meandering of "Kavita." Placed at Old Ramon's end, the latter song is an intriguing coda: Is this then end of the Red House Painters as we know them, or an arrow pointing the way down a new road?
