Editorial Reviews

The American musical reached maturity on March 31, 1943, with the premiere of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein's debut collaboration, Oklahoma! Never before had a show's score, libretto, and choreography been so united in storytelling. The results were sensational. Starring Alfred Drake, Joan Roberts, and Celeste Holm, Oklahoma!was also the first musical immortalized in an original cast album, allowing listeners to relive the magic of "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'," "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top," "Kansas City," "People Will Say We're In Love," "Pore Jud Is Daid" (an alternate take is included) and the foot-stompin' title tune. This is a classic recording as well as a timeless work of art. David Cohen, Barnes & Noble

October 23, 2004: Just to clear things up...The performers on this CD are NOT the actors in the 1955 movie version starring Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae. This CD has the actors and actresses from the 1943 stage version. All of the performers, including Alfred Drake and Joan Roberts, on this recording have wonderful, rich, expressive voices. Unlike other modern musicals that make headlines and then disappear, this musical has endured for over 60 years and still remains loved. The songs include upbeat, cheerful pieces as well as one of the most beloved love songs of all time, "People Will Say We're In Love." And, of course the comical "I Cain't Say No" is one of the musical's highlight numbers. This recording includes a couple of songs that are only found in the stage version such as "Lonely Room" and "It's A Scandal! It's An Outrage!" There is also an extended version of "Out of My Dreams" on this CD, which is only briefly sung by Shirley Jones in the movie version. This recording is sure to be loved by anyone- from Rodgers and Hammerstein experts to a newcomer to the musical genre. I reccomend this CD to anyone who enjoys the movie version and anyone who wants to listen to one of the definitive musicals in American history. It doesn't get much better than this!

December 18, 2002: I am really surprised at how well the voices match those in the movie musical. I say that's promising.
