Not to be confused with the 1969 Pair/Buddah album of the same name, BMG Special Products' Oh Happy Day is a sampler of the Edwin Hawkins Singers' early '70s recordings for Pavillion and Buddah. Since the group only had one big hit, "Oh Happy Day," t("Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)," their duet with Melanie, doesn't really count, since they were support, not lead), this is effectively the same as any official hits collection to most casual fans. That's not to say it's a definitive retrospective -- a comprehensive compilation would feature "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" and some killer album tracks missing here -- but it is a good sampler of the group's peak years. Among the highlights besides "Oh Happy Day" are "Joy, Joy," "To My Father's House," "Precious Memories," "I Shall be Free," "I'm Going Through," "Jesus, Lover of My Soul" and "Early in the Morning."
