Officium brings together two very distinct and distant musical styles -- medieval vocal music and jazz improvisation -- to create an entirely new world of sound. Once you hear saxophonist Jan Garbarek's cool tone soaring over the Hilliard Ensemble's radiant singing, you might wonder why it took so long for this marriage to take place. Garbarek dives in and out of the vocalists' undulating lines like a skywriter weaving his weightless trail among the clouds. The overall mood is restful and ruminative, though there are times when Garbarek lets the subtle tensions in these ancient pieces inspire him to render more rough-hewn riffs. Is it classical? Jazz? September 23, 2007: I have countless cds..from most genres. This is on my shortest list of favorites...I don't know how to tell you why..other than when I first heard the cd as recommended from a trusted opinion I was struck by the beautiful sounds I was hearing....the tight harmonies of the Hilliard Ensemble..almost like the harmony of the Father and the Son of the Trinity...and then the wonderful free expressions of Garbarek's Sax weaving in and out,sympathetic and resonant with the harmonies....but yet another person entirely....like the Holy Spirit. Sometimes the Saxophone is shocking...but in a strangely appropriate way within the context of the piece. It is one of the few works that I turn to that never fails to satisfy. Think of towering cathedral forests of the imagination..shrouded in mist...and a trumpeting exotic bird calling out from within....

April 05, 2004: The music wisks you away into a place of peaceful solitude and meditation. I am a lover of classical music, jazz music, and gregorian chanting and the combination of all of these musical types is astounding. The harmony between the century old chants from the Hilliard Ensemble and modern saxaphone from Jan Garbarek gives way to one of the most rare combonations found in music today. As a child it put me to sleep and now it helps with meditation as well as providing an enchanting background while reading a book. It is truely worthwhile buy for any jazz or classical music lover.
