First of all, Oceanborn takes a huge step away from Nightwish's debut album, Angels Fall First. All the elements of folk music and ambience are forgotten, and instead Nightwish have concentrated on using Tarja Turunen's wide voice in the context of pure heavy metal -- or, well, another description could be operatic metal. Drama and a variety of melodies are used effectively, overruling all expectations to the contrary, and the songs are not merely catchy -- they have longevity. Also, the whole band does great work; even though they seem like Dream Theater wannabes, Holopainen and Vuorinen use their instruments with patience and don't descend into unneeded trickery. So everything seems to be all right, yet the album as a whole still lacks a bit of diversity, and sometimes falls into the trap of repeating itself. However, the songs remain very strong, and the album as a whole works well. So far, Oceanborn is the most successful album by Nightwish.
