This is not just a concert version of Obrigado Brazil, Yo-Yo Ma's breezy, bestselling album. In fact, only five tunes return here, and some of the novelties Ma and his friends dish up aren't even Brazilian. Two selections are drawn from Ma's Soul of the Tango, for example, which features music by the late, great Argentinean composer Astor Piazzolla. But what makes this concert recording even more delectable than its namesake is the relaxed joyousness of the performances. It all just shakes, shimmies, and sways with great freedom and sensuality. Many of the stars who appeared on the original Brazil disc are back, including clarinetist Paquito D'Rivera, vocalist Rosa Passos, percussionist Cyro Baptista, pianist Kathryn Stott, and the Assad brothers guitar duo. The concert was held in New York's intimate and acoustically friendly Zankel Hall (located directly underneath the famed Carnegie Hall) in September 2003 and was one of the space's inaugural events. The sound is recaptured beautifully on the disc (with a little help from Sony's expert engineers); it's just like having Ma and his band in your living room. What could be nicer?
