No band plays old-school funk like Tower of Power. Now in its 35th year, this venerated band still has the grit and incomparable tightness of the classic R&B units of the 1960s and 70s. Not that the band sounds dated; reunited with their great drummer Dave Garibaldi (last heard on 1979’s Back on the Streets) and introducing a terrific lead singer, Larry Braggs -- not to mention the super bassist Francis Rocco Prestia and that celebrated horn section -- TOP are buffed to a shine. New funky tunes such as “Pocketful of Soul,” “Oakland Zone,” “Page One,” and the hit-worthy “Could’ve Done It Better” and “Happy ‘Bout That” are up there with the band’s classics, while the ballad “Remember Love” showcases the adaptable Braggs’s sensational romantic style. In all, this long-established band proves that there’s always a place for classic R&B as long as it's played with from-the-gut power, integrity, and consummate style. Steve Futterman, Barnes & Noble
