Editorial Reviews

They say it's the Internet that has encouraged the blossoming of micro-genres and the aggregate influence of such genres' scattered fans. Perhaps. But there's far more exhilarating evidence of the same phenomenon every time New York-based Balkan Beat Box convenes. Staffed by a shifting cast centered around Israeli expats Tamir Muskat (drums corporeal and virtual), Ori Kaplan (sax), Itamar Zeigler (bass), and Tomer Yosef (MC and mayhem), BBB draws from everywhere. There's the titular Balkan brass displayed in its purest form on "BBBeat," electronic dance throb with Gypsy samples ("Delancey"), Arabic pop ("Pachmina"), and dancehall reggae moods ("Digital Monkey"). Bulgarian women's choirs and video-game effects are appropriated in equal measure, along with Jewish liturgical melodies and DJ patter. Guitarist Jeremiah Lockwood brings bottleneck slide licks to underscore rapping in Hebrew…it goes on and on. Apart from the considerable musicianship required to pull these varied styles off, you gotta admire BBB for making these unlikely ingredients not only addictive but incredibly hip. Tubas and dancehall? Wicked! Mark Schwartz, Barnes & Noble
